I’m Michelle, a multi-passionate millennial, wife, mom, law student, entrepreneur, and the voice behind Take Back 9 to 5.
As soon as I was old enough to work, I got my first after-school job at McDonald’s. I loved earning my own money, so I actually liked working. When I went to college, I had work study during the school year and had one, sometimes two jobs during the summers.
I’ve always had a job, but I’ve also always had some sort of side hustle or form of income that I could earn on my own terms. Having a job may have been necessary for my personal situation at the time, but I always hated working for other people.
In December 2017, my husband Isaiah was laid off a few weeks before Christmas. Not only did it create a financial hardship, but as with any job loss, it was disheartening. He bounced back with another job that he actually liked and we got back on track.
In February 2018, he lost that job due to company restructuring, right before we celebrated our daughter’s first birthday.
I was so angry that we were in a position that allowed someone to do something like that. Here he was leaving his family for 40-50 hours a week working hard build someone else’s business only to be looked at as a disposable employee instead of a human being when it was convenient. Essentially, another person was allowing us to be able to feed our family. Welcome to corporate America.
Taking Back 9 to 5
One day, I became fed up with society’s accepted concept of going to college, graduating with crippling debt, only to beg someone else for a job (that you may not even like) so that you can provide for your family. Oh, and don’t forget about those student loan payments.
We’ve been conditioned to believe it’s completely normal to spend 2,080+ hours a year building someone else’s dreams, allowing them to live the life they want while we all leave our families each day, dependent on those jobs to provide for them.
One day I said to myself, “what would it look like if we spent that much time on our own dreams and business?”
And that’s what Take Back 9 to 5 is all about.
“The idea that our society is best served when all family members separate in the morning, to do things they generally don’t enjoy, could be the biggest fallacy ever imprinted upon humanity.”
– Jason Christoff
